The Barge Has Landed
We knew it was coming but now it’s here! A 90 ft by 60 ft construction barge with a large crane has decided to winter in the middle of the Mystic River just south of the bridge. It will be used for the on-going restoration of the Historic Mystic River Bascule Bridge.
There will be an impact to our guests. Rooms 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 11 will see the barge outside their windows. We are told by the State DOT that work will take place Monday through Friday starting at 7:30 AM. If work is going to take place on the weekend we will be notified and get that information out to our guests as we receive it.
Inn Owner, Paul Connor, sees this as an opportunity to see history in the making!! “This is a once in a hundred year event. The engineering involved with lifting the huge counterweights off the bridge is amazing. When they are raised, the huge bearings and electric motors used in operating the bridge will be replaced, hopefully lasting another hundred years.” If you want a bird’s eye view Steamboat Inn is the place to be!!
